How an Indian TV show is using data to change the world

I am a big advocate of using technology for educational purposes, and as a consequence, to bring about positive social changes by empowering individuals or by changing people’s perceptions about social issues.

Recently, “Satyamev Jayate”,  a popular Indian television talkshow hosted by Aamir Khan, one of India’s most recognisable actors, is doing exactly that. The show has a huge national following and it engages its audience by polling their feedback on what are the important issues that should be addressed on the show. This is done through data mining of Twitter tweets, website comments and Facebook messages. So far, topics covered have included the caste system, child abuse, female feticide and dowry deaths. I like how the audience participates in the content creation of the show. I also like the data visualisations on their website on audience responses.
