This Gramophone is actually version 2 of “The Synesthete’s Music Machine”. Version 1 uses a lightbox and was shown at the Singapore mini-maker faire in July 2014. Version 2 uses a gramophone and was shown at the Penang mini-maker faire four months later. I made the hardware while my teammate programmed the software. The principle is the same:- the webcam scans the image and detects the colour and position of the lego blocks and the software translates this to sound.
I spent four weeks making it, and it was done at a new makerspace in Singapore operated by the One Maker Group. I wrote a blog entry on the process of making it here.
